Who We Are
Sarafu is a Kenyan personal finance blog built for everyday Kenyans who want to take control of their money. The word sarafu means “currency” in Swahili — and that is exactly what we are about: helping you understand, manage, and grow your hard-earned money.
We believe that sound financial knowledge should not be locked behind jargon, paywalls, or foreign-focused advice. Whether you earn KSh 20,000 or KSh 200,000 a month, you deserve clear, practical guidance that speaks to your reality — from M-Pesa money market funds to NSE stocks, SACCOs to Treasury bills, SHIF to emergency savings.
Our Mission
To make personal finance simple, accessible, and actionable for every Kenyan. We break down complex financial topics into guides you can actually use — written in plain language, backed by real data, and rooted in the Kenyan financial landscape.
What We Cover
Our content is organised around three pillars:
Invest — How to put your money to work. We cover money market funds, stocks on the Nairobi Securities Exchange, Treasury bills, unit trusts, and digital investment platforms like Ziidi, Cytonn, and more. We compare rates, explain fees, and walk you through the process step by step.
Protect — How to safeguard what you have. From health insurance (SHIF vs NHIF) to emergency funds, SACCOs, and risk management — we help you build a financial safety net that actually works.
Grow — How to build wealth over time. Budgeting strategies adapted for Kenyan salaries, saving hacks, side hustle ideas, and long-term wealth-building habits that compound over the years.
Why Trust Sarafu?
Every article we publish is researched with data from official sources — the Capital Markets Authority (CMA), the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK), the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), and the fund managers themselves. We do not guess. We verify, compare, and present the numbers so you can make informed decisions.
We are independent. We are not owned by a bank, a fund manager, or a brokerage. Our recommendations are based on merit, not sponsorship deals.
Who Is Behind Sarafu?
Sarafu was founded by a team of Kenyan finance enthusiasts who got tired of seeing the same recycled advice that did not apply to the Kenyan context. We started this blog because we wanted a resource we wished existed when we were starting our own money journeys — one that explains how to actually buy your first shares on the NSE, which money market fund gives the best return, or how much SHIF will cost you in 2026.
We are building Sarafu to be the go-to personal finance resource in Kenya. If there is a money topic that matters to Kenyans, we want to cover it — thoroughly, honestly, and in a way anyone can understand.
